The Dirty Truth about Overheating Servos

Heat failure is one of the biggest problems for motion control technology, especially as we move into warmer temperatures. What causes heat failure? Well, obviously, heat.

Ambient temperatures get higher in spring and summer, of course, but we don’t always notice it. If it’s a gradual increase, we humans can gradually adjust. Servomotors and drives can’t. An open cabinet in a room that’s getting steadily hotter is asking for trouble. Even in a controlled environment such as an air-conditioned cabinet, your servos may need a little more juice for their A/C.

That’s not the only issue, though. You may be surprised to learn that one of the main reasons for heat failure in Rexroth’s Indramat servo motors is dirt.

That’s right. Ordinary dirt in the mechanism impedes air flow and leads to heat failures.

You might think that this means you can pull your motor out, clean it, stick it back in place, and go your merry way. Not so fast. First, Rexroth servo motors with digital feedback can’t be disassembled and reassembled in the field. Second, the process will lead to excessive downtime, even if your particular component could be cleaned.

Drives can’t be cleaned in situ. For safety’s sake, electricity should be shut off and all movement should cease before you remove any part of the servo drive system. Any diagnostic work or troubleshooting should be completed, and then all parts should be replaced before electricity is sent to the system again.  As we said, the downtime is going to be too long. It makes more sense to replace the part with a new or factory repaired one. Replace the software module from the defective part and get your plant back to work.

Then send your old part back to the factory for remanufacturing, for like-new results. With emergency replacement units and 24 hour turnaround on factory repair, we can have you up and running again in no time. Call (479) 422-0390 for immediate help.
