The Battle Bots are coming back to a screen near you in just about one month. Once again, tough and predatory robots, some with fiendish faces or animal shapes, will be guided by teams of human beings in gear from cowboy to steampunk (not to mention onesie pajamas) through robot combat.

BattleBots began a decade ago in Long Beach, California. At the time, robot combat competitions were… let’s just say they were very much a niche sport. Fast forward a couple of years and they showed up on Comedy Central. One tournament gave fodder for a full season of intensive robot battles.
Robot combat continued in the real world, or as real as the world of robot combat events can be. Then the BattleBots show was taken on by ABC. This year, the Science Channel and Discovery host the show. Between IRL competitions and TV shows (with YouTube bridging the gap), BattleBots have grown into a global phenomenon.
Servo motors
BattleBots need servo motors and intelligent motion control. Without servos to control their movements, the bots could never achieve the power and precision required for bloodthirsty robot combat.
One BattleBot may have a dozen or more servos controlling its actions.
These may not be the identical servo motors, drives, and controllers that you use in your facility, but the principle is the same. Precise control of the movements of robot “limbs” with multiple axes let BattleBots chomp up their competitors, or your printing press create awesome product packaging. Either way, it’s important to keep the machinery in great shape.
