Color of the Year, and Why We Don’t Care

International color authority Pantone has announced the Color of the Year for 2013. It’s Monaco Blue, the shade you see here. While many of us already have overalls in this trendy shade, we mostly don’t care.

Oh, we might care on a personal, non-work level. I mean, I don’t know anyone who does, but I’m not prepared to say that nobody involved with servos and motion control is currently planning to paint something Monaco Blue or maybe buy a candle this color or something.

The thing is, the Pantone worldview is completely different from ours.

Every year, designers all over the world plan to change the colors of ordinary things like shirts and lamps for one single reason: so you have to buy new ones.

Oh, they don’t put it that way, but that’s essentially the point. This year, Tangerine Tango was the official color of the year. People who had not worn or bought something orange saw orange things in every store window, magazine, and car lot, and began to feel — maybe on a subconscious level — that life would be better if they had something orange. People who resisted orange found that they had trouble buying new stuff that worked with the old-fashioned color schemes in their homes and closets.

If it weren’t for fashion, we’d still be using all the stuff we bought when we moved into our first apartments, and the consumer economy would grind to a halt.

We specialize in Indramat servo motors, drives, and controls. True, there was that exciting change from gray to brown on some models, but basically they were built, installed, and worked. We see Indramat components from the 1970s that have never had a problem till the one that made their owners call us.

The object is to keep working, not to make up a reason to buy a new one. Let us help you keep your Indramat motion control working. Call us at (479) 274-8422 next time you need support with your Rexroth Indramat components.
