America’s industrial sector is not as badly off as the rest of the world’s, but there’s reason to believe that the global industrial sector’s problems are affecting America.
Growth in manufacturing in the U.S. has been contracting for three months, with last month signalling the fastest rate of loss so far. This news followed reports of worse results in the dwindling manufacturing sectors of Europe and China.
The plot thickens.
American industrial output was actually higher in August — and above the magical 50 index figure that makes people worry. The dismal figures referred to above took into account exports and projected overseas need for American goods.
So here we are working hard, producing more, and still getting nervous looks from the people in charge of the numbers.
U.S. companies are responding by hiring fewer workers and making fewer investments in their equipment.
