Things AI Can’t Do: Valentine’s Day

Conversation Hearts

For example, in 1980 she inputted 360 expressions from candy conversation hearts and asked the program to generate some new ones.

Human beings can easily think of possible candy hearts expressions. Here are a few proposed by my colleagues:

• Be Mine
• Love You
• XOXO
• Hugs

Shane’s program generated some that could possibly pass muster:

• Love Bun
• Cute Kiss
• Dear Me
• My My

And some that were completely unconvincing:

• All Hover
• Swool Mat
• Tweet Up Bat
• Time Star
• Stank Love
• Sweat Poo

This year, Shane used GPT-3 to generate some conversation heart sayings. It has a completely different style from previous tries, but it’s not very good at the task. Here are some of its suggestions:

• Evil
• I Am the Best
• Our tentacles are more alike than you might think
• Ribbon
• You Bear the Petals
• Apple Pie

Baked treats

If you’re going to stay home with your sweetheart on Valentine’s Day because of the pandemic, you’ll want to make some special treats.

Shane fed her network 30,000 recipes, and it came up with some weird things.

A few pie options:

• Caribou Meringue Pie
• Basic France Pie
• Butterscotch Bean Pie
• Buster’s Fib Lemon Pie
• Snood Pie

Don’t be too curious about these pies. The recipes do not sound full of promise, even if the names are intriguing. For example, here is a recipe for tuna pie:

Beothurtreed Tuna Pie

pastries, fruits, pork

1 hard cooked apple mayonnaise
1  onion
3 tablespoon butter
5 cup lumps; thinly sliced
½ cup chicken broth
1  carrot, spinach (vanilla estach w/pecans)
1  freshly ground black pepper – optional

Surround with 1 ½ dozen heavy water by high, and drain & cut into ¼ in.
