Indramat, Indradrive, What’s the Difference?

Indramat, Indradrive, Indraworks, Indralogic, Indradyne, Indramotion, Indracontrol… the list goes on and on. What’s this Indra, and what’s the difference among all the various forms of Indra- motion control?

To get the answer, we have to go back to the mid 20th century. In 1958, a company called “Gesellschaft zur INDustrialisierung-RAtionalisierung und AutoMATisierung” came into being in Germany. They used those bold capital letters to create their more popular nickname, Indramat. In English, their name was “Association for INDustrialization, RAtionalization, and AutoMATion.”

The nickname still worked fine.

Indramat made electric servo motors, drives, and controls.Their high quality, heavy duty industrial motion control systems were especially popular with printing presses, packaging companies, and other industries that needed the combination of power and precision.

They were innovators, bringing the brushless AC servo motor to the world. Their modular design and Personality Modules were game changers.

While Indramat was rising in the electric motion control field, a company called Rexroth was shining in hydraulic motion control. In 1965, the two companies joined forces when Rexroth bought Indramat. In 2001, Bosch bought Rexroth, gathering Indramat into the fold as well. Soon, the company decided to bring hydraulic, electric, pneumatic and mechanical drive and control technologies together under the single name Rexroth.

Market research had convinced them that this was the best option.

Rexroth supported the Indramat legacy, and used “Indra” (INDustrialization and RAtionalization) for new product lines. These include Indradrive, Indradyne, Indralogic, and more. The new names honor the Indramat heritage. But Rexroth does more than pay lip service to the Indramat name.

Rexroth continues to support Indramat machinery. You might think that components made by a company that ceased to exist at the turn of the century would not be able to have the benefits of factory repair. You’d be wrong if you thought that. We can still provide factory repair and reman for most Indramat components. This means that you can have a new warranty. Your components will be repaired and refurbished with original parts. And you don’t have to put up with third party repair. Call us first when you need Indramat or Rexroth electrical industrial motion control support.
