Robot Cruelty?

It’s almost impossible to think about new robot technologies without getting emotional. We hear about robot abuse, an alarming trend among humans to physically abuse robots. Reseachers program robots to manipulate human beings emotionally — and it’s way easier than you would think. Now YouTube has removed hundreds of robot battle videos because their bots thought those videos represented animal cruelty.

Animal cruelty, or robot cruelty?

Did you have a moment of thinking that the robots naturally considered robot battles cruel, or did you immediately understand that the bots mistook robots for animals? YouTube says it was an error, and not an example of robot compassion.

The rule is simple: “Content that displays the deliberate infliction of animal suffering or the forcing of animals to fight is not allowed on YouTube.”

Robot builders weren’t able to identify the elements of the videos that caused the mistake. Some videos had animal names in their titles, because the robots in the videos had names like that.

There are also robot videos that make humans uncomfortable because they seem to include an element of cruelty. Plenty of people dislike the video showing a man kicking a sort of dog-shaped robot.

The flagged videos might have contained movements that suggested forced fighting or suffering.

We don’t see this in the factory.

Robot stressors

But we do experience the emotional effects of our robots. We feel stress when they quit working the way we need them to — and we keep feeling that stress until they’re working right again.

Rexroth electric motion control usually works trouble free for decades. When a problem arises, the response can be panic. The components aren’t designed to be repaired on the machine. You can’t run down to the hardware store and pick up replacement parts. The guys at Bob’s Bait and Servo Repair aren’t trained to work on Rexroth motion control systems.

Call us as soon as you realize you have a problem. We can help you interpret the error codes and figure out what’s wrong. Factory repair or reman might be the best solution, and we also have the largest stock of emergency replacement units in the nation.
